HISTORIOGRAPHY - THEN AND NOW

Historiography (history writing) was one of those sciences that figured prominently during the Enlightenment even as Europe came out of the Dark Ages of myth, religion, and monarchies.

It became immensely important for philosophers, reformists, and scientists of the early modern era to pursue the truth and find it. This ambition was reflected strongly in historiography. To find the truth about the past and tell it on the basis of available evidence was what history in the modern period was.

Today historiography around the world is changing. The new compulsion is to concoct history in favor of one’s preferred ideas, people, benefactors, and beneficiaries. Truth no more matters. Creating an impression of reality that is to one’s advantage, even if it is false, wrong, and unethical has become the rule in historiography in certain contexts.
